Getting started
What is Mission.io?
We make Missions: teacher-led, whole-class simulations where students use what they’re learning to solve a real problem together. You teach the unit, and the Mission is where the class puts it to work.
Which Mission should I run first?
Start with the Station Training Mission for your grade band, and run it with your students. Everyone learns the controls together, so your first real Mission runs smoothly.
Can I try a Mission myself before my class does?
Yes. Every Mission page has a Teacher Preview, a short video walk-through. You can also launch a Mission and join from a second device with the code to see exactly what students see.
How much prep does a Mission take?
About five minutes. Watch the Teacher Preview and pick the Mission your unit points to. When you launch it, the lobby on your main screen shows the code students use to join.
Do you offer training or PD?
Yes, and it’s free. Start with the four Mission Essentials videos right on your Mission library page: they cover the basics in under 15 minutes. Want to go deeper? There’s a full library of training videos, and we’re always happy to help on live chat or hop on a call. Schools and districts with a license also get a faculty kickoff training.
Can we run a Mission with our staff?
Yes, free. Faculty Missions are built for staff meetings: your teachers crew a Mission together and see exactly what their students will. RUN A FACULTY MISSION →
Do we need a new curriculum?
No. Missions attach to whatever you already teach. Tell your class what’s coming, teach the unit, and the Mission is where everything gets used.
Running a Mission
How long does a Mission take?
30 to 45 minutes for grades 3 to 8, and about 20 to 30 minutes for K-2. Each Mission’s page lists its time, and you can save it and finish another day.
Do students all do it at the same time?
Yes. A Mission is live and whole-class. You open the lobby, students join with the code, and you press start. Everyone’s in the same story at once.
Do I project it? Is there a teacher app?
Project the main screen, where the story plays out, on a projector or TV with sound. You run the Mission from the Teacher Station: click Launch Teacher Station and scan the QR code to open it on your phone or tablet. No extra device? Open the Teacher Station on the same computer. Just extend your display instead of mirroring it, so the class sees the Mission and only you see the Teacher Station.
Can I pause and finish another day?
Yes. When you exit, choose Save for Later. The Mission moves to Ready to Launch at the top of your Mission library, with your other prepped Missions, so you can pick it right back up.
Where did my saved Missions go?
Every Mission you’ve prepped or saved for later lives in Ready to Launch at the top of your Mission library. Don’t see it? Check that the class you’re running it with is selected, since Ready to Launch shows the Missions for that class.
How many students can join one Mission?
There’s no hard cap. Missions are built for a full class, and 40 or fewer works best. Some Missions need a minimum number of teams, because each team gets its own unique information, and those Missions will tell you when you set them up.
My class period is shorter than the Mission. Now what?
Save it for later and finish next class. Missions are built to pause cleanly between days.
What do I do about absent students?
Anyone who doesn’t join is marked absent when you start. Rebalance teams in the lobby so nobody ends up alone.
Can a student join after we’ve started?
Yes. Students on your class roster join like everyone else, with the code. Anyone who isn’t on the roster types their name, and a notification pops up on your Teacher Station so you can admit them.
Can a co-teacher or sub finish a Mission I started?
Only from your account for now. Missions can’t move between accounts, and a co-teacher option isn’t available yet.
How do I handle silly student names?
Names with inappropriate words don’t just get flagged. They’re filtered out, and you review them privately on your Teacher Station before admitting anyone.
Should teams sit together?
Yes. In any Mission with teams, students should sit with their team. Want teams that match your seating chart? When you create the Mission, choose default teams instead of random teams.
Students & devices
How do students join? Do they need accounts?
No accounts and no passwords. Every Mission you launch shows a four-digit code in the lobby on your main screen. Students go to mission.io, type it in, and they’re in.
What technology do I need?
One device per student (Chromebooks, tablets, or laptops all work), plus a teacher computer on a projector or TV with sound. Nothing to install.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Mission.io runs in the browser on every device. For the smoothest Missions, we recommend Google Chrome.
Chromebooks can’t connect, but my laptop can. Why?
It’s almost always your district’s web filter blocking live connections. Send us your district IT contact and we’ll work with them to allow Mission.io.
Does it work on iPads?
Yes. Mission.io runs right in the browser, so iPads work just like any other device.
What do I do if a Mission won’t load?
Message us on chat right away. Most of the time it’s the school’s internet or web filter, and our team can see what’s being limited and help you work around it. Very rarely, the site goes down for a moment as we grow to keep up with demand, and we’ll tell you on chat if that’s what’s happening.
I’m a student. Can I make an account?
You don’t need one! Your teacher runs the Mission and gives your class a code. Ask your teacher.
Is Mission.io available in Spanish?
You can switch individual students to Spanish in the Classes tab. Full Spanish Missions aren’t available yet.
Can a Mission read text aloud for young readers?
Yes, per student. Turn on text-to-speech for any student in the class editor; that student’s device needs sound.
Classes & rosters
How do I add a class?
No classes yet? Click the big yellow button at the top of your Mission library to add your first one. For more classes, click your current class’s name to open the class dropdown and add a class from there. Add students by hand, upload a CSV, or import from Google Classroom or Canvas.
Do I have to set up a roster?
No. Use Quick Launch and students type their own names as they join. Mission.io saves that group as a class automatically, and you can rename it anytime: pick it from the class dropdown on your Mission library and edit it.
How do I bring in my Google Classroom classes?
Sign in to Mission.io with your Google account, or connect Google under Authentication in your Account tab. Either way, your Google Classroom classes import automatically. Then create a Mission and pick the class. If a class shows zero students, message us on chat and we’ll fix it.
Does Mission.io work with Canvas?
Yes. A Canvas admin installs it once, then teachers bring their Canvas classes into Mission.io. Setup steps are on our Canvas integration page. CANVAS SETUP →
Does Mission.io work with Schoology?
Yes. Your Schoology admin installs the Mission.io app from the App Center. Setup steps are on our Schoology integration page. SCHOOLOGY SETUP →
Does Mission.io work with Clever?
Yes. Teachers can log in with Clever, and students don’t need logins at all: they join with the Mission’s code. Want a custom Clever integration for your school or district? Connect with our team and we’ll set it up with you.
Missions & standards
What grades is it for?
K through 8. A few mixed-age Missions reach up to 12th grade for after-school, CTE, and STEM programs.
What subjects do Missions cover?
Science, math, ELA, and social studies, K through 8. Science has the deepest library, and we’re adding more math.
How many Missions are there?
100+ Missions, K through 8, built from the standards you teach.
Are Missions aligned to standards?
Yes. Every Mission lists the standards it’s built from on its page, including NGSS and state standards. The Standards tab helps you find Missions for yours.
Is there a Mission for my state’s standards, like TEKS?
Check the Standards tab, which maps Missions to state standards. If yours is missing, tell us. Requests shape what we build next.
How often do new Missions come out?
All the time. We’re always building new Missions and improving the ones you already love, and we typically release one or two a week. Catch every announcement on our socials, @missiondotio, or in What’s New.
Why does a Mission say “under construction” or “retiring”?
We’re always improving Missions based on teacher feedback, to make them stronger academically and more engaging. While a Mission is being reworked, it shows as under construction, and retiring Missions are replaced by improved versions on the same standard. Wondering when one is coming back? Ask us on chat.
Can I make my own Mission?
Not yet. You can add your own questions to any Mission, and we’d love your Mission ideas.
How do I add my own questions?
Go to Quiz Questions in your dashboard and create a question group. Then, when you create a Mission, customize its questions: add as many as you want from your own groups or shared groups, up to that Mission’s question limit.
I think a Mission has a mistake. How do I tell you?
Message us from the chat or email support@mission.io. Our education team reviews every report.
Reports & research
What does Mission.io measure?
Every Mission gives every student a report on how well they did, built from each student’s behaviors and performance across the whole Mission. Reports draw on six competencies (Knowledge, Application, Initiative, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, and Resilience), covering the ones each Mission is built to capture.
What skills do students practice?
Human skills: collaboration, critical thinking, initiative, and resilience, alongside the content they’re using. Every student gets a report on how well they did.
How do I see my class’s results?
Open Analytics and pick the class. You’ll see every Mission it ran, with date, subject, mastery, and skills. Use the Mission dropdown to look at one Mission.
Is Mission.io evidence-based?
Yes. Mission.io meets ESSA Level II standards, as validated by Instructure. An independent quasi-experimental study of 1,039 fifth graders found statistically significant gains in content knowledge (g = 0.335, p < .001), writing performance (g = 0.269, p = .015), and behavioral engagement (g = 0.173, p = .009). In knowledge and writing, gains grew with every Mission run. SEE THE EVIDENCE →
Content knowledge +0.94 percentage points per Mission (p < .001); writing +0.035 rubric points per Mission (p = .049). Bautista et al., 2026.
What does ESSA Level II mean?
The Every Student Succeeds Act sorts evidence into four levels. Level II, Moderate Evidence, requires at least one well-designed quasi-experimental study with statistically significant favorable findings.
Who conducted the research?
Instructure, the company behind Canvas, conducted and authored the 2025-26 efficacy study, funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences. Earlier development was funded by the National Science Foundation. Mission.io’s own research team ran the other studies.
Can I read the full study?
Yes. The full report and its ESSA validation are free to download on our Evidence page, no email required. More research is underway, building to a large-scale randomized controlled trial through a federal Education Innovation and Research grant. SEE THE EVIDENCE →
Will students actually enjoy it?
It plays like a game on purpose, and the whole class is in it together. See what teachers say on our For Teachers page.

For parents
Is Mission.io a game?
It feels like one, on purpose, and we love what that does: kids let a Mission push them further than they usually let themselves be pushed. But it’s built very differently from typical learning games. Instead of each kid alone on a screen chasing points, the whole class shares one experience and solves one problem together, using what they’re learning.
How much screen time is it?
We take screen time seriously, and we care even more about screen value. A Mission runs about 20 to 45 minutes, and the screens are there to get kids looking up as fast as possible: at each other, at the problem, at their teacher. The screen is the tool. The teamwork and the conversation are the point.
Does it actually work?
Yes, and the bar it clears is higher than most of the tools, games, and apps kids use at school. Mission.io meets ESSA Level II standards, as validated by Instructure. An independent study of 1,039 fifth graders across 53 classrooms found that students who ran Missions made significant gains in what they knew and how well they wrote, and the more Missions a class ran, the more students grew. Content knowledge g = 0.335, p < .001; writing g = 0.269, p = .015 (Bautista et al., 2026). SEE THE EVIDENCE →
My kid’s school doesn’t use Mission.io. Can it?
